Studio Artes
Curation as a form of drawing research gathers quietly, taking shape through the cross-conversation of artists, works, writing and thought. Testing the bounds of drawing, this practice proceeds iteratively, allowing meaning and knowledge to form gradually over time — still provisional, still forming.
Studio Artes / A Kind of Magic
A Kind of Magic brings together artworks made by the members of Studio ARTES Inner West, a not-for-profit organisation facilitating creative programs for people with disabilities.
Everyone in A Kind of Magic began with the same materials, but what emerged was a diverse array of voices. These are artists with disability, each bringing a distinct way of sensing, organising and expressing the world. Communication across the works unfolds through colour, repetition, shapes and distinct styles. The uniform size of works and the horizon-style hang allows them to sit easily beside each other and foregrounds each voice equally. The exhibition was enjoyed by family and friends and the wider community of Newtown. What was shared was not simply finished artworks but a way of being together through making and the joy of art which is distinct, resonant, unique.
